A long-time reproductive rights activist, Marlene is well known nationally and internationally as a writer, lecturer, and advocate for reproductive freedom. She was the founding president of the National Network of Abortion Funds and the Abortion Rights Fund of Western Massachusetts. She worked on abortion advocacy internationally with the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights. As Faculty Director, Marlene leads Collective Power for Reproductive Justice’s academic programming, teaching, and student advising. She was the founding director of the Five College Certificate in Reproductive Rights, Health and Justice, and her courses include From Choice to Justice: The Politics of the Abortion Debate, The Battle Between Science and Religion in Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Creating Families. She edited From Abortion to Reproductive Freedom: Transforming a Movement and co-authored Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organize for Reproductive Justice. She is currently writing a book with Loretta Ross and Namrata Jacob, RJ-ing AbortionL Viewing Abortion Politics through a Reproductive Justice lens. From 2017-2018, she was a visiting scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law School. She was the Interim President of Hampshire College in 2010-2011.
